Abstract
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness among diabetic patients worldwide. The condition develops gradually due to prolonged damage to retinal blood vessels caused by elevated blood glucose levels. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to prevent severe vision impairment. However, conventional diagnosis depends heavily on ophthalmologists and retinal imaging specialists, making large-scale screening difficult in resource-limited healthcare systems. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence and deep learning have enabled automated medical image analysis systems capable of assisting clinicians in disease detection. Deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have demonstrated remarkable performance in image classification and pattern recognition tasks. In healthcare diagnostics, these techniques can analyze retinal fundus images to identify early signs of diabetic retinopathy with high accuracy. This paper presents a deep learning-based framework for early diabetic retinopathy detection using retinal image analysis. The proposed system integrates image preprocessing, feature extraction, CNN based classification, and severity grading mechanisms to improve screening efficiency and diagnostic reliability. Experimental analysis was conducted using publicly available retinal datasets containing normal and abnormal retinal images. Performance evaluation demonstrates that the proposed framework achieved significant improvements in detection sensitivity and classification accuracy compared to conventional machine learning methods. The proposed system supports scalable and cost-effective diabetic retinopathy screening suitable for smart healthcare environments and telemedicine applications. The framework contributes toward early intervention, reduced diagnostic delays, and improved accessibility of retinal healthcare services.
